The Support Center for Persons with Disabilities conducted a Disability Awareness Workshop on 26th August 2022. Academic, executive and non-academic staff took part. The team ran the workshop in two parts so every group could attend comfortably.
Purpose of the Disability Awareness Workshop
The university recently opened its Support Center for Persons with Disabilities. The Disability Awareness Workshop introduced the center’s purpose and activities. It also explored practical ways to include persons with disabilities in the university community. Staff awareness is the first step toward an inclusive campus. Every student and employee deserves dignity and equal opportunity.
Resource Persons of the Disability Awareness Workshop
Two experienced resource persons guided the sessions:
- Dr. M. Malaravan, Consultant Eye Surgeon, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna
- Mr. V. Subramaniyam, Member of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities
Their insights helped participants understand the needs, challenges and rights of persons with disabilities. They also showed how daily practices can create or remove barriers. The National Council operates under the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.
Schedule and Participation
The first part of the disability awareness training ran from 9.00 am to 11.00 am. Academic and executive staff attended this session. The second part ran from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm for non-academic staff. In total, 86 participants attended. That included 40 academic and executive staff and 46 non-academic staff. Their active involvement shows strong interest in building an inclusive university.
Towards an Inclusive University
The Disability Awareness Workshop marks an important step in the university’s commitment to inclusion. The Support Center for Persons with Disabilities will keep raising awareness. It will support students and staff with disabilities. It will also work with the whole university community to remove barriers to participation. Future programs will build on the ideas from this workshop. Inclusion benefits everyone in the university.
