The University of Vavuniya Cricket Team recorded a convincing six-wicket victory over Eastern University in a friendly 50-over One-Day Cricket Match organized by the Physical Education Unit, University of Vavuniya, on 25 July 2026.
After winning the toss, the University of Vavuniya elected to field first. The decision proved highly effective as the bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance, restricting Eastern University to 143 all out in 48.2 overs.
Eastern University’s batting line-up found it difficult to establish partnerships against the accurate bowling attack of the home side. Jeyashankar Anusiyan top-scored with a brisk 25 runs off 26 deliveries, while Varalakshan Selvakumar contributed 19 runs. Sasindu Sandesh and Navanesan Pirakas added 15 runs each, but the visitors were unable to build significant momentum throughout the innings.
The University of Vavuniya bowlers maintained excellent control from the outset. Mohammed Riwaqi delivered the standout performance with exceptional figures of 4 wickets for 26 runs in 10 overs, while Sahan bowled an outstanding economical spell, claiming 2 wickets for just 10 runs in his 10 overs, including three maiden overs. Valuable support came from Janith Dayarathna, who claimed 2 wickets, while Krishnan Kirubagaran and Praveen picked up one wicket each to complete an impressive bowling display.
Chasing a target of 144 runs, the University of Vavuniya approached the run chase with confidence and composure. Opening batter Lahiru Welagedara produced a match-winning innings of 64 runs from 56 balls, striking eight boundaries and three sixes to provide the foundation for victory. Janith Dayarathna made a valuable contribution of 31 runs, while Rashan Wijerathna remained unbeaten on 19 runs to guide the team across the finish line. The University of Vavuniya reached 144 for 4 in 30.2 overs, securing victory with six wickets in hand.
For Eastern University, Sivanesarasah Abinesh was the most successful bowler, claiming 2 wickets for 26 runs, while Amaan Nazeer and Navanesan Pirakas took one wicket each.
Lahiru Welagedara was the standout performer with the bat, while Mohammed Riwaqi’s outstanding four-wicket haul and Sahan’s economical spell laid the foundation for the victory. Their combined efforts enabled the University of Vavuniya to dominate the match in both bowling and batting, earning a well-deserved win.
