The Opening Ceremony of the VALID Centre (Centre for Verification of Accuracy and Learning for Innovation & Development) was successfully held on 23rd January 2026.
The event took place at the Park Road Premises of the University of Vavuniya. The University Business Linkage (UBL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, organized the programme.
The VALID Centre serves as an Incubation Centre for Sustainable Food Innovation.
Chief Guests and Dignitaries
Hon. Sunil Handunneththi, Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development, attended as the Chief Guest.
Hon. Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena, Minister of Science and Technology, attended as the Guest of Honour.
In addition, Members of Parliament, senior ministry officials, district administrators, and university authorities participated in the event.
Entrepreneurs, researchers, Vidatha officers, and other stakeholders also joined the ceremony.
Ceremony Proceedings
The programme began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp. This was followed by the National Anthem and a cultural welcome performance.
Senior Professor A. Atputharajah, Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, delivered the welcome address. He highlighted the importance of the VALID Centre in promoting innovation and sustainable development.

Mrs. S. Mathivathany, Director of the University Business Linkage, presented an overview of the VALID Centre.
She explained its objectives, facilities, and services. She also highlighted its role in supporting innovation and entrepreneurship.
Furthermore, representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology emphasized the importance of research commercialization.
Industry and Entrepreneurial Insights
Industry representatives from TRACE Sri Lanka shared key insights on innovation and market development.
Successful entrepreneurs from the food sector also shared their experiences. They highlighted challenges and growth opportunities in the industry.
Testing Demonstration and Exhibition
A major highlight of the event was the testing demonstration conducted at the Centre.
The Centre also officially handed over testing reports to entrepreneurs. This demonstrated its operational readiness.
In addition, an Exhibition and Innovation Showcase was held. Guests observed innovative products and technologies developed through the incubation process.
