Thai Pongal 2022 Vavuniya: Celebration at the University
The Thai Pongal 2022 Vavuniya celebration took place at the University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka, on 5 February 2022. Students, staff and guests came together to mark the Tamil harvest festival with the traditional pongal ritual and a cultural programme. The gallery below shares photos from the day.
The Pongal Ritual
Thai Pongal is a festival of thanksgiving to the Sun God and to nature for a good harvest. In the ritual, participants cook fresh rice and milk in a clay pot over an open fire, and everyone celebrates when the milk boils over. At the university, the pot stood in an open area decorated with banana plants and palm leaves. Students and staff took turns to prepare the offering, and a lit lamp, bananas and other fruit marked the sacred setting.
Programme in the Hall
After the ritual, guests gathered in the hall for a cultural programme. Speakers addressed the audience from the stage, and organizers presented certificates and gifts to participants. [Add the names of the chief guest, speakers and the events that took place, such as competitions or performances.]
Why Thai Pongal Matters
Thai Pongal brings people together across departments and years of study. The celebration at the University of Vavuniya helps students stay connected to their traditions and shows the diversity of the university community.
