Vavuniya University Inauguration Ceremony: Video and Highlights
The Vavuniya University Inauguration Ceremony took place on Friday, 11 February 2022, at 10.30 a.m. at Pampaimadu, Vavuniya. The event marked the official inauguration of the newly established University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka. The video above shows highlights from the day.
About the Ceremony
The university had originally planned the ceremony for 11 August 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a postponement. Guests followed health guidelines and brought their vaccination cards to the venue. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. T. Mangaleswaran, invited dignitaries, officials and guests to attend.
Inauguration Programme
The ceremony began at 10.30 a.m. with the opening of the plaque, the Information Technology Centre and the Harmony Centre by the President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The programme then continued with:
- National Anthem and Welcome Dance
- Welcome address by the Vice-Chancellor
- Video presentation on the university’s history, logo, motto and master plan
- Addresses by the Chairman of the University Grants Commission, the Secretary of the Ministry of Education and the Minister of Education
- Launch of the university website
- Inaugural address by the President
- Presentation of mementos and the vote of thanks
Why the Vavuniya University Inauguration Ceremony Matters
The ceremony marked an important step for higher education in the Northern Province. The new university gives students in Vavuniya and the surrounding districts a local place to study, and it opens new opportunities for the region.
