A training programme titled “Empowering Academic and Executive Staff to Support Students’ Mental Health” was successfully conducted on 11th September 2025.

The session was held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at TLH 1 Hall, Faculty of Technological Studies. The Support Centre for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) organized the programme.

The main objective was to improve staff knowledge and skills in supporting students with mental health challenges.

Opening Session

Mrs. V. Kajanthy, Director of SCPD, delivered the welcome speech. She highlighted the importance of mental health awareness in higher education.

She also emphasized the role of academic staff in creating a supportive learning environment. This support helps improve student well-being.

Resource Person Session

Dr. M. Senavirathne, Consultant Psychiatrist from District General Hospital, Vavuniya, conducted the training session.

He delivered an interactive presentation on common mental health issues among students.

In addition, he explained how to identify early warning signs of mental health concerns.

He also shared practical communication and referral strategies for academic staff.

Furthermore, he discussed ways to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Participation and Engagement

A total of 20 academic and executive staff members participated in the training.

The session was highly interactive. Participants actively joined discussions and shared their experiences.

Moreover, they asked questions related to real challenges faced in student support.

Outcomes and Conclusion

The training improved staff understanding of student mental health needs.

It also provided practical tools for early intervention and support.

The programme concluded successfully at 12:00 noon. Participants gained confidence in supporting students effectively.

Overall, the SCPD plans to organize similar programmes in the future.

These initiatives will further strengthen the university’s mental health support framework.
