The University of Vavuniya Mental Health Training Programme 2025 was organized by the Support Centre for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) on 11th September 2025. The programme, titled “Empowering Academic and Executive Staff to Support Students’ Mental Health,” took place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at TLH 1 Hall, Faculty of Technological Studies, University of Vavuniya.

First, the programme aimed to strengthen staff skills in supporting students with mental health challenges. In addition, it focused on improving awareness of student well-being in the university environment.

Mrs. V. Kajanthy, Director of SCPD, delivered the welcome speech. She highlighted the importance of mental health awareness in universities. Moreover, she emphasized that academic staff must actively support students and build a positive learning environment.

Next, Dr. M. Senavirathne, Consultant Psychiatrist (MBBS, MD) from the District General Hospital, Vavuniya, conducted the training session. He delivered an interactive presentation on common mental health issues among students. Furthermore, he explained how staff can identify early warning signs.

In addition, he discussed communication strategies and referral methods for students who need professional help. He also shared practical approaches to create an inclusive and supportive academic atmosphere. As a result, participants gained useful knowledge and practical tools.

A total of 20 academic and executive staff members attended the University of Vavuniya Mental Health Training Programme 2025. Throughout the session, participants actively joined discussions. They also shared their experiences and asked questions related to student mental health.

Finally, the programme concluded successfully at 12:00 noon. Participants expressed that the training improved their understanding of student mental health support. Overall, the Mental Health Training Programme 2025 strengthened staff confidence in handling student well-being concerns.

The SCPD will also organize similar programmes in the future. Therefore, the university aims to further improve its mental health support system for students.
