The University of Vavuniya held a one-day Nursing Research Workshop, Empowering Nurses Through Evidence, Data, and Innovation, at its IT Centre Laboratory. Organized by the Committee for Establishment of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the Nursing Research Workshop brought together about 18 Nursing Officers from the Vavuniya district.

Sessions covered research planning, data collection, methodology, publication, and the use of artificial intelligence in nursing practice. Resource persons included Prof. G. Kishokanth, Prof. Nirmala Rathnayaka, Prof. Leo Anthony Celi, Dr. R. Nagulan and Dr. T. Kartheeswaran. Dr. J. M. Nilaxan, Director of District General Hospital Vavuniya, spoke on evidence-based clinical nursing practice, and Dr. Jeyagowry Nimalan introduced the University’s Top-Up Nursing Degree Program, which drew strong interest.

Participants practised prompt-writing with the RTCSO framework, worked through five clinical case studies, tried ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and learned to spot AI hallucinations. They also discussed patient data privacy under the Personal Data Protection Act 2022.

Vice Chancellor Snr. Prof. A. Atputharajah presented certificates at the closing ceremony and encouraged further research and study. The organizers recommended extending similar programs to other districts and holding a follow-up session on research methodology and publication.
