A workshop titled “Mental Health and How to Maintain It” was successfully held on 30th November 2025.

The programme took place from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at SH4 and SH3 Halls. It was conducted for both Tamil- and Sinhala-speaking students of the University of Vavuniya.

The Support Centre for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) organized the workshop. The main goal was to improve students’ understanding of mental health and emotional well-being.

Opening Session

Mrs. V. Kajanthy, Director of SCPD, delivered the welcome address. She highlighted the importance of mental health awareness in higher education.

She also emphasized that good mental health supports both academic success and personal growth.

Resource Persons

The Tamil session was conducted by Dr. S. Suthakaran, Senior Medical Officer at District General Hospital, Vavuniya.

The Sinhala session was conducted by Dr. N. S. Dharmadasa, Medical Officer (Mental Health), District General Hospital, Vavuniya.

Both sessions focused on stress management, emotional resilience, and early identification of mental health concerns.

In addition, they explained the importance of seeking support when facing emotional challenges.

Student Participation

A total of 185 students participated in the workshop.

The session was highly interactive. Students actively joined discussions and shared their personal experiences.

Moreover, they asked questions related to academic stress and daily challenges in university life.

Conclusion and Future Plans

Overall, the workshop improved students’ awareness of mental health and well-being.

It also encouraged open discussions about emotional health within the university community.

The SCPD plans to organize similar programmes in the future.

These initiatives will further strengthen mental health support for students.
