The Certificate in Sign Language inauguration ceremony took place on 14 February 2026. The Support Centre for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) of the University of Vavuniya conducted this event. Furthermore, the ceremony took place at 11.30 a.m. at the Park Road premises of the University.

Welcome Address

Mrs. V. Kajanthy, Director of SCPD, delivered the Welcome Address. She highlighted the importance of inclusive education. Additionally, she emphasized the university’s commitment to empowering persons with disabilities. She noted that the Certificate in Sign Language marks a significant step toward communication accessibility and social inclusion.

Guest Speeches

Mr. S. A. Jude Leon, Director of CDCE, addressed the gathering first. He shared his views on the growing need for sign language proficiency. Subsequently, Dr. S. Suthakaran, Senior Medical Officer of the Vavuniya District General Hospital, spoke next. He emphasized the importance of sign language in healthcare. Moreover, he stressed effective communication with persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Mr. M. Sathiyakumar, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Education, University of Jaffna, delivered an insightful speech. He spoke on inclusive pedagogical practices. He also covered the role of sign language in equitable learning environments. Therefore, Prof. A. Atputharaja, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, officially declared the program inaugurated. He expressed appreciation to SCPD and CDCE for initiating this course.

Vote of Thanks

Mrs. Y. Vithursana, Assistant Registrar of CDCE, proposed the Vote of Thanks. She acknowledged the contributions of chief guests, the organizing committee, academic staff, and students.

Interactive Discussion on the Certificate in Sign Language

Following the formal proceedings, teachers and students held an interactive discussion session. The Course Coordinator explained the course structure and curriculum. Additionally, the coordinator covered expected learning outcomes. As a result, students actively engaged in the discussion. Their enthusiasm reflected strong commitment to the Certificate in Sign Language program.

Finally, the inauguration marks a promising beginning for this program. This initiative reflects the University of Vavuniya’s dedication to inclusivity, accessibility, and community engagement.
