The University of Vavuniya organized an Awareness Workshop on Disability on 26th August 2022. The Support Center for Persons with Disabilities arranged the event at the Soosairatnam Block (SH3) of the Faculty of Business Studies. The workshop aimed to improve awareness about disability inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities within the university community.
Several distinguished professionals conducted the workshop and shared valuable knowledge with the participants. Dr. K. Nandakumaran, Deputy Provincial Director and Health Services Director of the Northern Province, discussed the importance of disability awareness in educational institutions and workplaces. Dr. M. Malaravan, Consultant Eye Surgeon at Teaching Hospital Jaffna and Council Member, explained the importance of healthcare support and accessibility for persons with disabilities. Mr. V. Subramaniyam, Center Coordinator and Member of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, spoke about inclusion, equal rights, and social responsibility.
The organizers conducted two separate sessions for university staff members. Academic staff and executives attended the morning session. Non-academic staff members joined the second session.
The workshop helped participants understand the challenges faced by persons with disabilities. It also encouraged staff members to create a more inclusive university environment.
The event highlighted the importance of equality, accessibility, and student well-being. It also showed the university’s commitment to inclusive education and social responsibility.
