The Vavuniya University new library officially opened on 2nd August 2025. Her Excellency Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and Minister of Education, performed the inauguration at 9:30 AM. She unveiled the commemorative plaque and toured the facility. This milestone marks a major step forward for higher education in the Northern region.
A Historic Inauguration
The Prime Minister inaugurated the library in a formal ceremony. Senior university officials welcomed her, including Chancellor Professor Dr. S. Moahanthas and Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor A. Atputharajah. The Registrar, Bursar, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, academic staff, and student representatives also attended. Several district officials joined the event, including the Government Agent of Vavuniya, health professionals, and other senior figures.
Discussion with the University Community
Following the inauguration, Dr. Amarasuriya held a comprehensive discussion with the university community. Staff and students raised key concerns. These included the need for more human resources, new faculties, and improved shared facilities such as cafeterias, study spaces, and advisory centres.
The Prime Minister firmly addressed campus safety. She stressed the government’s commitment to eliminating ragging and all forms of campus violence. She also affirmed that peaceful student activism would always be respected.
Vision for Research and Postgraduate Education
Dr. Amarasuriya urged universities to move beyond producing only first-degree graduates. She advocated for a shift toward postgraduate research and advanced learning. She acknowledged that school-level skill gaps place extra pressure on universities. Her vision includes transforming the University of Vavuniya into a hub for teacher education, cutting-edge research, and internationally recognised postgraduate programmes.
A Milestone for the Northern Region
