1. Introduction
The Netball Team of the University of Vavuniya took part in the Inter-University Netball Tournament 2026 with great enthusiasm, commitment, and determination. The tournament gave the team an excellent opportunity to compete against strong university netball teams and gain valuable competitive experience.
2. Tournament Performance
The team played three matches during the tournament against the University of Wayamba, the University of Jaffna, and the University of Ruhuna.
The match results were as follows:
- University of Wayamba 49 – 04 University of Vavuniya
- University of Jaffna 24 – 01 University of Vavuniya
- University of Ruhuna 50 – 00 University of Vavuniya
Although the team was unable to secure a victory in any match, all three games provided valuable experience for our players. The opposing teams demonstrated strong skills, experience, teamwork, and tactical understanding.
Despite facing these challenging opponents, our players competed with determination and gave their maximum effort throughout all three matches. The team demonstrated good teamwork, discipline, communication, and fighting spirit, continuing to compete until the final whistle.
3. Team Effort
One of the main strengths of our team throughout the tournament was our team spirit. Every player contributed according to their role and supported one another during difficult moments.
Although the final results were not in our favour, the tournament experience showed that our team has the potential to improve and compete more effectively at a higher level.
4. Challenges Faced
The tournament was a challenging experience as we competed against well-prepared and experienced university teams. The intensity of the matches tested our players’ physical fitness, tactical understanding, decision-making, and mental strength.
Another major challenge was that we trained without a coach. We lacked an understanding of some rules and playing techniques; consequently, facing a well-trained team became a very difficult task.
The three defeats highlighted several areas for improvement, particularly in maintaining consistency, improving scoring and finishing opportunities, strengthening defensive play, and handling pressure during crucial moments of the game.
5. Conclusion
Although the Netball Team lost all three matches, the results do not fully represent the effort, commitment, and determination shown by our players. We played with courage and fighting spirit against very tough opponents from the University of Wayamba, the University of Jaffna, and the University of Ruhuna.
The tournament was a valuable learning experience for the entire team. The players gained important competitive exposure and identified areas that require further improvement.
We are proud of the way the team fought in every match. These defeats will motivate us to work harder, improve our weaknesses, and come back stronger in future competitions.
The results may not have been what we hoped for, but the effort, teamwork, commitment, and fighting spirit of our players were truly commendable.
