A Generous Donation for a Greener Campus

The University of Vavuniya gratefully acknowledges a remarkable contribution. Mr. K. Uthayakumar, proprietor of Uthayan Agro Services (Pvt) Ltd., 1st Cross Street, Vavuniya, donated trees, a tube well, and a complete solar-powered drip irrigation system. As a result, the university’s green landscape has been permanently transformed.

The Donation in Detail

The contribution included 188 Pongam oil trees and 22 Christina plants. In addition, Mr. Uthayakumar fully funded and installed a tube well and solar-powered drip irrigation system. Together, these cover approximately 1.4 kilometres — from Gate 1 to Gate 4 along the Vavuniya to Mannar Road. Consequently, a long stretch of the university boundary is now a thriving green corridor.

Part of the University’s Green Environment Programme

This project is implemented under the university’s ‘Development of Landscape and Green Environment Programme’. The programme aims to enhance biodiversity and promote sustainability across campus. Furthermore, it creates a healthier environment for students, staff, and the surrounding community.

The Handover Ceremony

The official event took place on 3rd October 2023. On that day, Mr. Uthayakumar personally handed over the solar-powered drip irrigation system to Prof. T. Mangaleswaran, Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya. Academic, executive, and non-academic staff all attended. Thus, the event reflected the entire university community’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Why This Project Matters

The solar-powered irrigation system delivers water efficiently. Moreover, it runs on renewable energy, reducing both costs and carbon footprint. The Pongam oil tree (Millettia pinnata) is ideal for roadside planting. It provides shade, prevents soil erosion, and supports local biodiversity. Meanwhile, the Christina plants add aesthetic value to the landscape.

A Heartfelt Thank You

The University of Vavuniya sincerely thanks Mr. K. Uthayakumar and Uthayan Agro Services (Pvt) Ltd. for this invaluable gift. Indeed, such corporate generosity is essential in building a sustainable and environmentally responsible campus. This donation will benefit the university community for many years to come.
