The Staff Development Centre, in collaboration with the Administration Branch, conducted a Five-Day Training Programme for permanent Security Guards. Specifically, it ran from 17 to 21 August 2026 at the University of Vavuniya. Sessions took place from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. In addition, the team held Parade Drill sessions separately, from 6.30 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. on the relevant training days.
Mr. Aliyar Mohamed Jabir served as the resource person. He previously worked as Chief Security Officer at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.
The programme aimed to enhance several key areas. For instance, it targeted the knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies of the Security Guards. Additionally, it focused on discipline and their understanding of university security operations. To achieve this, participants took part in theoretical sessions and practical activities. They also completed parade drills, discussions, and scenario-based exercises. Furthermore, experience-sharing sessions helped participants better understand their roles and responsibilities.
The training covered several important areas. Firstly, it included gate security, entry and exit control, and patrolling. It also covered campus monitoring and the protection of university property and personnel. Beyond that, the programme addressed emergency preparedness and incident management. Fire safety and university rules formed part of the curriculum as well. Finally, the training included legal responsibilities, student and hostel security, and special event security.
The programme also strengthened key professional skills. For example, it built communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities. Moreover, it emphasised duty planning, discipline, and responsible conduct. Through practical activities and discussions, participants gained more confidence. As a result, they improved their ability to respond to different security situations.
Overall, the programme achieved its goals. It improved the knowledge, skills, discipline, and professional standards of the Security Guards. Consequently, they can now perform their duties more effectively. This, in turn, will help maintain a safe, secure, and well-managed environment at the University of Vavuniya.
