A visit was conducted on 24th September 2025 to the Centre for Prosthetics at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. The purpose of this visit was to gather valuable insights that could be applied to improve the services of the Support Centre for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) at the University of Vavuniya.
SCPD Visiting Team
The visiting team from SCPD included:
- Mrs. V. Kajanthy – Director, SCPD
- Mr. J. Diroshan – Member, SCPD
- Ms. N. M. P. Rifana – Management Assistant, SCPD
In addition, the visit was facilitated by Dr. (Mrs.) T. Thanihaichelvan, Senior Lecturer and Head of Mechanical Engineering.
During the visit, it was observed that the Centre for Prosthetics provides significant support to both the university community and the general public in addressing the needs of individuals requiring prosthetic body parts. The Centre has also established strong links with few organizations, through which patients can be referred for advanced prosthetic solutions under a number of collaborative projects.
Through discussions, it was mutually agreed between the SCPD and the Centre for Prosthetics that there is considerable potential for collaboration. The Centre expressed its willingness to consider referrals from the SCPD, thereby enabling students and community members from the University of Vavuniya who require prosthetic support to benefit from the Centre’s facilities. Moreover, the Centre indicated that it could assist in facilitating access to specialized prosthetic fittings in India for such individuals through its existing projects. Overall, the visit proved to be highly valuable in identifying opportunities for partnership and knowledge exchange. The insights gained will contribute towards enhancing the services of the SCPD at the University of Vavuniya, particularly in supporting people with physical disabilities who require prosthetic interventions.
