Name Board University Vavuniya – Official Unveiling
The University of Vavuniya unveiled its official name board University Vavuniya at the campus premises, marking a symbolic milestone in the institution’s journey to becoming an independent state university.
Significance of the Name Board
A university’s name board typically stands as one of the most visible markers of institutional identity, placed prominently at the entrance or main premises for staff, students, and visitors to see. For the University of Vavuniya, the installation of this name board followed the university’s formal elevation from a campus of the University of Jaffna to a fully independent state university, effective from 1st August 2021.
Background to the University
The University of Vavuniya traces its origins to the Vavuniya Campus, which functioned under the University of Jaffna for several decades before its elevation to independent status. Following a government Gazette Notification issued in June 2021, the university became Sri Lanka’s 17th state university and the first university located in the Vanni district, serving students from the Northern and North-Central provinces.
A Visible Symbol of Progress
The installation of the name board represents more than a physical marker — it symbolizes the university’s growth, independence, and the culmination of years of advocacy from local political and religious leaders who first proposed establishing a university in the region back in 2004. Since then, the institution has grown steadily, expanding its faculties and student intake year over year.
Today, the name board stands as a permanent reminder of the university’s identity and its role in expanding access to higher education in the Northern Province. For more updates on university milestones, visit the official University of Vavuniya website.
