The University of Vavuniya sits in Pampaimadu, Vavuniya. The university owns 160 acres of land, including a 25-acre forest pocket and two minor tanks, Saalampaikulam and Velan Kulam. Saalampaikulam lies between the residential area and the academic area. As a result, it maximises the biodiversity of flora and fauna and keeps the premises environmentally friendly.
Besides the forest pocket, the premises hold more than 2,500 trees of 65 species. These trees help us embrace nature and celebrate the seasons with their beauty. Moreover, they involve students and staff in their studies and hobbies, such as projects, photography and bird watching.
Vavuniya lies in the dry zone. Therefore, we have a summer/dry season (March – August) and a winter/rainy season (September – February). June is the driest month, while December is the wettest.
Landscaping is a creative and deeply satisfying experience. For this reason, we add landscape features that follow basic landscape principles. For example, you can make a garden or a plot of land more attractive by altering the existing design, adding ornamental features and planting trees and shrubs. In addition, indoor and outdoor landscape gardening involves staff and students in recreational activities.
To plan, design and develop these activities, we formed the Landscape and Green Environment Committee. The committee works under the proposed theme “The Arboretum University”, which would make Vavuniya the first arboretum university in Sri Lanka. It also develops the strategic and action plan for the landscape activities in time phases. Currently, we propose new landscape activities to develop the master plan with additional garden and landscape features.
Staff, students and visitors can visit and enjoy these gardening and landscape features. Eventually, this can make the University of Vavuniya a tourist spot and boost tourism.
