The University of Vavuniya achieved a historic milestone at the international sports festival in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Specifically, the university sent its largest-ever team to compete abroad from August 18 to 31, 2023. This participation marks the first time a single Sri Lankan university sent such a large group to an international tournament.
Five sports teams represented the university at this international sports festival. First, the men’s and women’s badminton teams took part in their respective categories. Additionally, the women’s basketball team competed strongly against international opponents. Furthermore, both men’s and women’s table tennis teams showcased their skills on the global stage. In addition, the men’s and women’s volleyball teams completed the university’s impressive lineup.
In total, 41 students and 4 officials traveled to Russia for the festival. As a result, the University of Vavuniya made Sri Lankan university history with this achievement. Moreover, no other university in Sri Lanka had previously sent this many students from a single institution to one international competition.
This participation reflects the University of Vavuniya’s strong commitment to sports development and international exposure. Therefore, the event was a proud moment for the entire university community. The university continues to encourage students to pursue excellence both academically and in sports.
