The Harmony Day Celebration 2023 at the University of Vavuniya brought together distinguished academics, peace researchers, and students on September 20, 2023. Specifically, the Harmony Centre hosted its 2nd Anniversary at SH 4 Hall, University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka. This milestone event promoted peace, unity, and sustainable development across the country.
Several prominent figures attended the occasion. Prof. T. Mangaleswaran, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, served as Chief Guest. Additionally, Ms. Kana Moriwaki, Peace Researcher and Advisor, and Mr. T. Balakumar, Political Specialist at the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, attended as Special Guests. Furthermore, Deans of the Faculties, the Registrar, Bursar, and religious leaders joined as Distinguished Guests.
A key highlight of the Harmony Day Celebration 2023 was a panel discussion on “Nurturing Foundations for Sustainable Peace: The Pathways in Sri Lanka.” Ms. Frances Bulathsinghala, a communication practitioner for peace building, moderated the discussion. Three expert panelists contributed to the dialogue. First, Dr. Jeyaseelan Gnanaseelan, Head of the Department of English Language Teaching at the University of Vavuniya, shared his insights. Moreover, Emeritus Prof. Ariyarathne Kaluarachchi, Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, offered his perspective. In addition, Mr. Ananth Palakidnar, Senior Journalist and Former News Editor of Ceylon Today and Sunday Observer, contributed valuable views.
The event also included a certificate awards ceremony. Students received recognition for excelling in competitions such as poem, debate, drama, speech, best announcer, and essay contests on National Unity. As a result, the ceremony celebrated the creative and intellectual contributions of participants.
Furthermore, the Harmony Centre launched a newsletter during the event. The newsletter highlighted the centre’s activities, achievements, and upcoming initiatives. Therefore, it served as a valuable resource for the university community and beyond.
