The Staff Development Centre of the University of Vavuniya organized a workshop titled “Uplifting Environmental Sustainability Performances to Increase the University Ranking of the University of Vavuniya” on 13th August 2025. The session took place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Smart Lecture Hall of the Faculty of Applied Science.

The environmental sustainability workshop at the University of Vavuniya aimed to improve staff awareness of sustainability practices and their impact on university rankings. In addition, the program encouraged participants to explore practical ways to strengthen environmental responsibility across academic and administrative activities.

Collaboration for Environmental Sustainability and University Rankings

The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development and the Institute of Environmental Professionals. Through this partnership, the university promoted sustainable development strategies that can improve institutional visibility and global recognition.

Moreover, the organizers emphasized that environmental sustainability plays an important role in modern university ranking systems such as Webometrics and other international assessment frameworks.

Resource Persons and Key Sustainability Topics

The environmental sustainability workshop at the University of Vavuniya featured four experienced resource persons:

  • Prof. (Ms) A. Nanthakumaran
  • Dr. S. Wijeyamohan
  • Prof. (Ms) S. Devaisy
  • Mr. G. Naveendrakumar

Each speaker discussed a different aspect of environmental sustainability and university development.

First, Prof. (Ms) A. Nanthakumaran explained the importance of integrating sustainability into teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, she discussed university ranking systems and suggested strategies to improve Webometrics rankings through sustainable academic practices.

Next, Prof. (Ms) S. Devaisy highlighted the role of research in environmental sustainability. She encouraged universities to integrate sustainability concepts into research activities in a more strategic and impactful manner.

Meanwhile, Mr. G. Naveendrakumar focused on operational aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He described current sustainability initiatives at the university and proposed additional improvements for future development.

In addition, Dr. S. Wijeyamohan discussed governance and global reputation. He recommended practical measures such as reducing polythene usage, minimizing paper consumption, lowering vehicle usage, reducing food waste, and protecting campus greenery.

Interactive Discussions on Sustainability Practices

After the presentations, participants actively shared ideas on improving environmental sustainability practices within the university. They discussed practical approaches to waste reduction, energy conservation, green campus initiatives, and sustainable resource management.

As a result, the participants agreed to establish a committee with representatives from different departments. This committee will coordinate future environmental sustainability activities and support initiatives that can improve university rankings and institutional reputation.

The environmental sustainability workshop at the University of Vavuniya demonstrated the university’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible environmental practices. Moreover, the workshop encouraged staff members to contribute actively to long-term sustainability goals.
