About the Effective Teaching and Mentoring Workshop

Key areas discussed included:

  • Student learning styles — Professor Ravichandran identified eight distinct learning styles among students
  • Effective teaching methods — including interactive lectures, technology use, simulations, and project-based learning
  • Case-based learning — applying real-world scenarios to deepen student understanding
  • Continuous assessment — using regular feedback to drive improvement
  • Mentoring strategies — building a clear mentoring philosophy and effective support systems
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion — promoting an inclusive learning environment for all students

Key Takeaways on Teaching and Mentoring

Professor Ravichandran stressed the importance of creating a student-centred learning environment. He emphasised that effective teachers adapt their methods to suit different learning styles. Regular feedback and ongoing assessment help students grow consistently.

On mentoring, he highlighted the need for academics to develop a personal mentoring philosophy. Supporting students through challenges, promoting equity, and celebrating diversity all contribute to meaningful mentoring relationships.
