Special Meeting with Assist RR Dr. Mark Penny and Donna Visited our University 

A landmark disability support university visit took place on March 7, 2024. It was held at the University of Vavuniya. The event brought together international partners and university leadership. Together, they worked to advance inclusive education for students with disabilities.

The Support Center for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) coordinated the visit. The delegation included Dr. V. Sarveswaran, Chairman of Assist Resettlement & Renaissance (Assist RR). In addition, Mr. Mark Penney and Mrs. Donna E. Penney attended. They represented Solihull School in the United Kingdom.

Key Discussions

Several senior university officials participated in this disability support university visit. These included the Vice-Chancellor, the SCPD Director, and the University Registrar. Furthermore, members of the SCPD Management Committee were also present. Three main topics formed the agenda:

• Progress review — First, participants reviewed activities completed using donated funds. They assessed the direct impact on students with disabilities across campus.
• Mobility aid procurement — Next, the group discussed purchasing wheelchairs, walking aids, and assistive devices. These were funded through charitable contributions. As a result, students gain greater independence on campus.
• Future funding and infrastructure — Finally, all parties explored additional financial assistance opportunities. The goal is to build more disabled-friendly facilities, ramps, and accessible spaces throughout the university.

A Growing International Partnership

This disability support university visit reflects a deepening international partnership. Assist RR and Solihull School have consistently supported inclusive education in Sri Lanka. Moreover, this meeting reinforced their shared commitment to equity in higher education.

The meeting concluded successfully. All parties agreed to continue their collaboration. Consequently, SCPD is well-positioned to expand its support services. The center remains dedicated to ensuring every student has equal access to education and campus life at the University of Vavuniya.
