To celebrate the 4th Anniversary of the University of Vavuniya, the Department of Physical Education proudly organizes the Inter-School Chess Tournament 2025 for schools in the Vavuniya District. Through this event, the university aims to encourage young chess players, promote sportsmanship, and strengthen student engagement in intellectual competitions.

The tournament will take place on 02 November 2025 at the University of Vavuniya, Pampaimadu. Moreover, the event will bring together talented school students from different age groups across the district.

Tournament Information

  • Date: 02 November 2025
  • Time: 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
  • Venue: University of Vavuniya, Pampaimadu

Age Categories

The organizers will conduct the tournament separately for boys and girls in the following categories:

  • Under 7
  • Under 9
  • Under 11
  • Under 13
  • Under 15

In addition, the organizers will calculate age eligibility as of 01 January 2025.

Eligible Birth Years

  • Under 7: Students born in 2018–2019 or later
  • Under 9: Students born in 2016–2017
  • Under 11: Students born in 2014–2015
  • Under 13: Students born in 2012–2013
  • Under 15: Students born in 2010–2011

Tournament Rules and Format

The organizers will follow the rules and regulations of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Sri Lanka Schools Chess Association. Furthermore, the tournament will include a maximum of six rounds, and each round will last for two hours.

If players finish with equal points, the organizing committee will apply the following tie-break methods:

  • Direct Encounter Points
  • Buchholz Cut 1
  • Buchholz
  • Greater Number of Wins with Black Pieces
  • Greater Number of Wins

Registration Process

Participants should complete the application form carefully and submit it before 4.00 p.m. on 27 October 2025. In addition, applicants must attach the payment receipt for the registration fee.

The university has fixed the registration fee at Rs. 500 per participant. Participants should deposit the payment into the University of Vavuniya account at People’s Bank, Vavuniya Branch.

Required Documents

Participants must submit the following documents together with the application form:

  • Copy of the birth certificate
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Payment receipt

Furthermore, the school principal should certify the participant’s age on the reverse side of the photograph. Applicants should also complete the form in English and write names clearly in capital letters.

Awards and Recognition

The organizing committee will award trophies to the top three winners in each category. In addition, players who secure places from 1st to 10th will receive special certificates. Every participant will also receive a participation certificate.

Important Guidelines

A teacher should accompany the participating students throughout the event. Moreover, participants must wear their school uniforms during the tournament.

If any participant wishes to submit an objection, they should hand it to the tournament organizers in writing within 30 minutes after the relevant match ends.

The university also expects all participants, teachers, and parents to protect university property and maintain proper discipline inside the university premises.
