The University of Vavuniya Students’ Union recently organized an exciting event. In collaboration with the Physical Education Unit, they hosted the Battle of Brothers Sports Tournament University of Vavuniya. This thrilling two-day event took place on 25th and 26th October 2025 at the main University Playground.
Student athletes from three major faculties proudly participated. These included the Faculty of Business Studies, the Faculty of Applied Science, and the Faculty of Technological Studies. The colorful opening ceremony took place on 25th October 2025. On this day, the Vice Chancellor graced the occasion as the Chief Guest to kick off the games.
Intense Faculty Matchups in Cricket and Football
During the two days, the teams played preliminary cricket and football matches. As the tournament progressed, the competition naturally became much more intense. The games were highly engaging and closely contested by all three faculties.

Faculty of Technological Studies Wins Cricket Championship
The cricket final of the Battle of Brothers Sports Tournament University of Vavuniya featured a great matchup. The Faculty of Technological Studies faced off against the Faculty of Business Studies. Batting first, the Faculty of Technological Studies put up a strong performance. They scored 119 runs for 5 wickets in their restricted 15 overs.
In reply, the Faculty of Business Studies batting lineup struggled. They faced a very disciplined bowling attack. Consequently, they scored only 67 runs while losing 7 wickets. The Faculty of Technological Studies comfortably secured the cricket championship title for 2025.
Penalty Shootout Decides the Football Title
Due to unexpected time limitations on the second day, the football matches changed format. The matches could not proceed as full standard games. Therefore, the tournament organizers moved the teams directly to penalty shootouts to determine the winners.
In the final shootout, the Faculty of Business Studies competed against the Faculty of Applied Science. The Faculty of Business Studies shooters performed exceptionally well under pressure. They scored 4 goals during the shootout. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Applied Science scored 2 goals. As a result, the Faculty of Business Studies successfully secured the football championship title.
Awards Ceremony and Presentation of Trophies
At the grand conclusion of the historic Battle of Brothers Sports Tournament University of Vavuniya, a special ceremony was held. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, Professor A. Atputharajah, presented the championship trophies to the winning teams.
Several prominent university officials joined him on stage. These officials included Dr. K. Arjunan (Proctor) and Mr. S. Suman (Marshal). Mr. R. Sivasegaran (Acting Director of the Physical Education Unit) was also present. They all warmly congratulated the students on their outstanding sportsmanship.
