The University of Vavuniya conducted an awareness session on computer technology for persons with visual impairments on Monday, 18 May 2026, for its fourth-year Computer Science students. Mr S. Yogathas, a serving staff member of the Ramakrishna Mission, Batticaloa, delivered the session. Dr. Nagulan, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, organized it. Mr. I. Hariharan, Lecturer in the Department of Physical Science, also attended throughout the session and participated in the demonstration. His presence and support contributed to the smooth conduct of the programme. It also facilitated the interaction between the presenter and the students.
This awareness session on computer technology aimed to give students an understanding of how persons with visual impairments effectively utilize computer technology in the modern digital environment. The discussion covered a range of topics, including assistive technologies available for visually impaired users and the role and functionality of screen readers. It also addressed practical methods of using these tools, along with various software applications commonly employed to enhance accessibility and digital inclusion.
The session gave students valuable insights into the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals. It also highlighted the technological solutions that enable independent access to information, communication, education, and employment. Students actively participated in the discussion and demonstrated keen interest in learning about accessible computing practices and inclusive technology design.
