The Staff Development Centre, in collaboration with the University Research Committee, successfully conducted the Research Talk Series – 2. The event took place on 22nd July 2026 at the Smart Lecture Hall, Faculty of Applied Science, University of Vavuniya.

Dr. A. Rukshan delivered the session. He is a Senior Lecturer in Information Technology, Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Business Studies. He presented his research on “Towards the Gamification of Training: Investigating Hotel Employees’ Perceptions of Game Elements.”

The session gave participants a clear understanding of the research process. This covered everything from identifying a research problem to analysing data and presenting findings. Dr. Rukshan also explained how gamification applies to teaching, learning, and training. He showed how game elements such as points, badges, levels, challenges, rewards, and feedback can improve motivation, engagement, and performance. He introduced participants to the periodic table of gamification elements. He then demonstrated how it can help design engaging learning experiences.

The session also raised awareness of several key topics. These included knowledge management, intellectual property rights, patenting, and the commercialization of research. This encouraged academic staff to develop innovative research with practical and commercial value. The interactive discussion allowed participants to share ideas and clarify their doubts. It also helped them explore new approaches for their teaching, learning, and research activities.

Overall, the programme enhanced participants’ research knowledge. It encouraged innovation and strengthened their capacity to apply research-based, technology-supported approaches in higher education.
