This research project, titled “Towards the Gamification of Training: Investigating Hotel Employees’ Perceptions of Game Elements”, was conducted under research grant number UOV/2023/UREC/RG/01.

The study provides important empirical insights into gamification in the hospitality sector in Sri Lanka. It shows how game-based learning can improve employee training effectiveness.

Key Findings

The findings reveal that many hotel employees had limited formal knowledge of gamification. However, they were already familiar with similar digital experiences in daily life.

The study also found that gamification increases motivation and engagement in training. It improves learning effectiveness among hotel staff.

HosTraSpace Gamified Learning Platform

The research introduced a gamified training platform called HosTraSpace. Employees used features such as points, levels, challenges, and feedback systems.

As a result, participants became more engaged in training activities. Many also reported higher motivation to complete learning tasks.

Preferred Game Elements and Design Considerations

The study found that employees strongly prefer points and levels. These elements help them track progress and feel a sense of achievement.

However, the research also highlights important design concerns. Excessive competition should be avoided.

In addition, fairness and trust must be ensured in the system. These factors are critical for successful implementation in Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector.

Practical and Academic Contributions

This study provides a practical framework for hotel managers and HR professionals. It supports the development of engaging and culturally appropriate training programs.

From an academic perspective, the research contributes to limited studies on gamification in developing countries.

Conclusion

Overall, the study shows that gamification is more than a technological trend. It is a strategic tool for improving employee training.

It transforms traditional training into an interactive and performance-driven learning experience. This supports long-term human capital development in the hospitality industry.
