The University Business Linkages of the University of Vavuniya organized a workshop on “Breaking Barriers: The Role of Media in Women’s Economic Empowerment for Journalism Students” held on 8th March 2025, from 09:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Lecture Hall on the park road, University Premises. Dr. Nimmi Gowrinathan, Scholar, Journalist, and Advocate for Women’s Political Voice, Visiting Professor at Columbia University, USA, served as the resource person for the session.
The workshop titled “Breaking Barriers: The Role of Media in Women’s Economic Empowerment for Journalism Students” was organized to highlight the critical role of media in advocating for women’s economic empowerment. Designed specifically for journalism students, the workshop aimed to explore how media can challenge stereotypes, amplify women’s voices, and promote gender equality in the economic landscape. The goal was to inspire future journalists to use their platform to create positive changes.
During the session, the resource person encouraged participants to share their opinions about the media and discuss their challenges, particularly regarding book writing and publishing. Many participants expressed difficulties in connecting with the media. The resource person shared personal stories and experiences in the media industry, offering valuable insights. She responded thoughtfully to questions and addressed participants’ concerns. Additionally, she collected the names of those interested in book writing and assured them that she would help connect them with expert media professionals. This networking support would facilitate the book launch process, making it easier for participants to promote their work in the media.
