Overview of the Program

The Harmony Centre’s new curriculum for conducting the Advanced Certificate in Media Literacy and Journalism (ACMLJ), a six-month programme in Tamil and Sinhala, has been approved by the University Council and is scheduled for successful commencement. The curriculum development committee of the Harmony Centre has developed the programme for 15 credits, adhering to SLQF Level Two standards.

The identified courses hold enormous potential and merit, not only in enhancing critical thinking, creativity, and practical competencies for producing a positive peace narrative, but also in offering employment opportunities within the expanding digital media sector.

This proposed certificate course aims to provide enhanced learning opportunities for aspiring journalists, those currently in the media industry, potential future journalists, and digital media enthusiasts to strengthen their professional competencies in the fundamentals of digital media consumption. It offers a holistic understanding across a wide range of topics, including media convergence, global media standards, media ownership, digital radicalisation, media and hate speech, media ethics, critical consumption skills, digital applications, the evolving media landscape, misinformation, verification skills, disinformation, news literacy, media bias, and agenda setting.

As media polarisation and information falsehood grow, journalists must practise their profession with greater responsibility and accountability. This course is designed to improve relevant knowledge and practical skills while offering training for journalists and civil society members, thereby enhancing career prospects, accessibility to further education, and professional development. A full description of the curriculum and examination structure can be found on the Harmony Centre’s website.
