University of Vavuniya Chess Tournament 2025
The University of Vavuniya Chess Tournament 2025 took place on 02 October 2025, organized by the Physical Education Unit to celebrate the university’s 4th Anniversary. The event was held at the University of Vavuniya premises in Pambaimadu, drawing enthusiastic participation from young chess players across the region.
Opening Ceremony
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. A. Atputharajah, served as the Chief Guest at the Vavuniya Chess Tournament, while Mr. S. A. Jude Leon, Chairman of the Sports Advisory Board, attended as the Guest of Honor. The ceremony began with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp by the guests, arbiters, and students. Mr. R. Sivasegaran then delivered the welcome speech, setting the tone for the day’s competition.
Tournament Categories and Participation
Matches for this year’s chess tournament at the University of Vavuniya commenced at 8:30 AM. More than 250 students participated, competing across the following age categories:
- Under-07 (Kids)
- Under-09 (Kids)
- Under-11 (Kids)
- Under-13 (Kids)
- Under-15 (Kids)
Each category saw close, competitive matches, reflecting the strong interest in chess among students in the Vavuniya district. Organizers structured the event to give players of all skill levels a fair opportunity to compete and demonstrate their strategic abilities.
Awards and Closing Ceremony
At the conclusion of the 2025 chess tournament, the Physical Education Unit distributed participation certificates to all attendees. The Vice Chancellor and the Chairman of the Sports Advisory Board awarded trophies to the winners who secured 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each category.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Instructress of Physical Education, Ms. G. Thusyanthy, who expressed gratitude to all participants, guests, and organizers for making the event a success.
