Doctoral Symposium – ICAS 2025
The Doctoral Symposium – ICAS 2025 brings together PhD researchers from Sri Lanka and abroad. They will share their work with peers, receive expert feedback, and connect with academics and industry professionals. The University of Vavuniya will host this event on 16th October 2025, from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm. This symposium forms part of the International Conference on Applied Sciences (ICAS) 2025.
About the Symposium
This year’s Doctoral Symposium at ICAS 2025 centers on the theme “Blending AI and Traditional Wisdom: Research and Development for a Sustainable Future.” This theme reflects a growing interest in combining emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, with traditional knowledge systems. Together, these approaches aim to address real-world challenges sustainably.
Presentation Format
Each researcher presenting at the Doctoral Symposium – ICAS 2025 will deliver an 8-minute talk. Afterward, a 3-minute discussion session will follow. This structure gives the audience a chance to engage directly with each presenter. As a result, attendees can ask questions and explore each research topic further.
Presentations at the Doctoral Symposium – ICAS 2025
The following researchers will present their work during this year’s symposium:
Circular Entrepreneurship and Open Innovation (4:27 PM – 4:38 PM)
Sinnathamby Vijayapala, University of Colombo, will present on circular entrepreneurship. Specifically, his talk covers open innovation in Sri Lanka’s plastic recycling industry. He will also examine institutional pressures and resource constraints within an emerging economy.
Utility of Legal Literacy in Regulating Social Media Users (4:38 PM – 4:49 PM)
Kalani Irosha Dharmasiri, University of Colombo, will explore how legal literacy can help regulate social media use.
Association Rule-Based Scoring for Event-Centric Semantic Knowledge Graphs (4:49 PM – 5:00 PM)
Munasin Vidana Pathirana Thilini Lakshika, University of Colombo School of Computing, will present a deep learning framework. This framework focuses on abstractive news summarization.
Using Aerial Imagery to Help Farmers Make Better Decisions on Nitrogen Requirements in Paddy Farms (5:00 PM – 5:11 PM)
C.L.I.S. Fonseka, University of Colombo School of Computing, will discuss aerial imagery use in agriculture. In particular, she will explain how it supports precision decisions on nitrogen use in paddy cultivation.
Brain Age Prediction Using Contrastive Learning and Biomechanical Properties (4:05 PM – 4:16 PM)
Jakob Träuble, University of Cambridge, will present research on predicting brain age. His approach combines contrastive learning techniques with biomechanical properties.
Landscape of Human Atherosclerotic Plaques (4:16 PM – 4:27 PM)
Korbinian Träuble, Helmholtz Munich and Technical University of Munich, will discuss findings on human atherosclerotic plaques.
