The Staff Development Centre of the University of Vavuniya organized a workshop titled “Uplifting Environmental Sustainability Performances to Increase the University Ranking of the University of Vavuniya” on 13th August 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Smart Lecture Hall, Faculty of Applied Science. The session was conducted by Prof. (Ms) A. Nanthakumaran, Dr. S. Wijeyamohan, Prof. (Ms) S. Devaisy, and Mr. G. Naveendrakumar, in accordance with the guidelines of workshop organized collaboratively by Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (CESSD), Open University of Sri Lanka and Institute of Environmental Professionals. The workshop aimed to enhance staff awareness on how environmental sustainability can contribute to improving the university’s global ranking.
Prof. (Ms) A. Nanthakumaran, explained the importance of teaching and learning in sustainability, highlighting ranking systems, strategies to improve Webometrics Ranking, and future action plans.
Prof. (Ms) S. Devaisy, addressed the role of research in promoting environmental sustainability and how universities can integrate it strategically. Mr. G. Naveendrakumar, discussed the operational implementation of the SDGs, highlighting the present sustainable practices within university & some strategic which can be practiced in future.
Dr. S. Wijeyamohan emphasized the role of governance and global reputation, suggesting practical initiatives such as banning polythene, reducing vehicle and paper usage, minimizing food waste, and protecting campus greenery. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants contributed their own ideas on developing and adopting environmental sustainability practices at the university level and It was decided to from a committee which represent member from different department / branches to collectively work for the better ranking.
