Overview of the Program

The Harmony Centre’s new curriculum for conducting the Advanced Certificate in Media Literacy and Journalism (ACMLJ), a six-month program in Tamil and Sinhala, has been approved by the University Council and is scheduled for successful commencement. The curriculum development committee of the Harmony Centre has developed the program for 15 credits, adhering to SLQF Level Two standards.

The identified courses hold enormous potential and merit, not only in enhancing critical thinking, creativity, and practical competencies for producing a positive peace narrative, but also in offering employment opportunities within the expanding digital media sector.

This proposed certificate course aims to provide enhanced learning opportunities for aspiring journalists, those currently in the media industry, potential future journalists, and digital media enthusiasts to strengthen their professional competencies in the fundamentals of digital media consumption. It offers a holistic understanding across a wide range of topics including media convergence, global media standards, media ownership, digital radicalization, media and hate speech, media ethics, critical consumption skills, digital applications, the evolving media landscape, misinformation, verification skills, disinformation, news literacy, media bias, and agenda setting.

As media polarization and information falsehood grow, journalists must practice their profession with greater responsibility and accountability. This course is designed to improve relevant knowledge and practical skills while offering training for journalists and civil society members, thereby enhancing career prospects, accessibility to further education, and professional development. The Harmony Centre, University of Vavuniya invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for the following courses:

Overview of the Program

The Harmony Centre’s new curriculum for conducting Advanced Certificate in Empowering Women in Politics, a six-month program in Tamil and Sinhala, is approved by the University Council and planned to successfully commence. The curriculum development committee of the Harmony Centre prepared the curriculum for 15 credits according to the SLQF standards for Level two.

The programme’s main focus is to develop the competencies of women by empowering and building capacity in politics, with the aim of improving the relevant knowledge and skills and providing training for women who are aspiring to get involved energetically in politics and decision-making processes. Therefore, the women’s main focus on a career in politics and decision-making organizations is two-fold: acquiring competency in politics and development planning, and management and acquiring competency in the disciplines of Empowerment, Leadership, Democracy and Governance. The aim of this programme is “to provide women with the wide range of knowledge and ability to effectively manage development programs with good governance in politics”.

The country requires more professional women in the fields of rural, urban, regional, and national development. This Advanced Certificate in Empowering Women in Politics (ACEWP) will increase the employability of women in educational organizations and communities. The certificate women holders will have high opportunities to find jobs or promote the employed with sufficient competing skills.
