The Staff Development Centre of the University of Vavuniya organized a workshop titled “University Ranking: Way Forward” on 2nd September 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at TCL 1, Faculty of Technological Studies. The workshop was aimed at academic and academic support staff and was conducted by Prof. R.G. Ragel, Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The session focused on understanding the significance of university rankings, especially Webometrics ranking, and how the University of Vavuniya can strategically enhance its position in global academic visibility.
Participants gained insights into the various metrics used to calculate university rankings and the key areas requiring attention to improve the university’s standing. The workshop covered important topics such as the impacts of rankings, necessary actions to uplift the university’s profile, and specific ranking parameters including publication visibility, digital presence, and website optimization. Prof. Ragel also explained popular ranking systems, their grading categories, and less commonly known ranking criteria. Overall, the workshop equipped attendees with a comprehensive understanding of how university rankings work, what factors influence them, and the steps needed to enhance the University of Vavuniya’s academic reputation on a global scale.
