The Staff Development Centre of the University of Vavuniya organized a workshop on “Effective Teaching and Mentoring” for academic and academic support staff on 08th July 2025 (Tuesday), from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Smart Lecture Hall, Faculty of Applied Science. The session was conducted by Professor N. Ravichandran, Professor of Civil Engineering at Clemson University, USA, who served as the resource person. A total of 48 participants attended the
workshop. The session focused on key topics such as understanding different student learning styles, effective teaching methods, mentoring strategies, and continuous assessment for improvement. Professor Ravichandran emphasized that students have eight distinct learning styles, and stressed the importance of creating an inclusive, student-centered learning environment.
He discussed various teaching strategies including interactive lectures, the use of technology and simulations, case-based and project-based learning, and the importance of regular feedback and ongoing assessment. Regarding mentoring, he highlighted the need for a clear mentoring philosophy, effective support strategies, and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The session concluded with a strong message on the value of inclusive, evolving teaching practices and the lifelong impact of effective mentorship in shaping students’ academic and personal growth.
