Physical Education Unit of the University of Vavuniya, organized by the netball tournament for schoolgirls under the age of 16 from the Vavuniya District was held on May 16, 2025, at the university playground.

This tournament was conducted in loving memory of the late Mrs. Puvaneswary Loganathan, Senior Lecturer and former Head of the Department of Bio-Sciences at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Vavuniya, in recognition of her dedicated contributions to both academic and extracurricular development.

Four schools from the Vavuniya South Educational Zone participated in the tournament:

  • V/Nelukkulam Kalaimahal Maha Vidyalayam
  • V/Rambaikulam Girls’ Maha Vidyalayam
  • V/Arivithottam Sivananda Vidyalayam
  • V/Gamini Maha Vidyalayam

The tournament followed a round-robin format, where each team competed against every other team. This structure fostered unity, sportsmanship, and a spirit of healthy competition among the participants.

At the conclusion of the tournament, V/Nelukkulam Kalaimahal Maha Vidyalayam emerged as the champions, while V/Rambaikulam Girls’ Maha Vidyalayam secured the runner-up position, and V/Gamini Maha Vidyalayam claimed third place.

The event was graced by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, who served as the Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring speech emphasizing the role of sports in shaping discipline and empowering youth.

Mrs. Gowri Nirmalan, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, participated as the Special Guest, and Mr. Jude Leon, Chairman of the University Sports Advisory Council, attended as the Guest of Honour, adding further prestige to the event.

Faculty of Applied Sciences staff members and lecturers were also present, offering their encouragement and support to the young athletes. Their involvement highlighted the university’s dedication to promoting holistic development and sporting excellence among students.

This tournament served not only as a celebration of athletic talent but also as a heartfelt tribute to a beloved educator whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.
