A Training programme titled “Empowering Academic and Executive Staff to Support Students’ Mental Health” was successfully conducted on 11th September 2025, from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, at TLH 1 Hall, Faculty of Technological Studies. This programme was organized by the Support Centre for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) with the objective of enhancing the knowledge and skills of academic staff in recognizing and supporting students facing mental health challenges.

The event began with a welcome speech delivered by Mrs.V.Kajanthy, the Director of SCPD, who emphasized the increasing importance of mental health awareness within higher education institutions. The Director highlighted the critical role that lecturers and academic staff play in creating a supportive learning environment and ensuring students’ well-being.

Following the welcome address, the training session was conducted by the resource person, Dr.M.Senavirathne, Consultant Psychiatrist (MBBS, MD) from the District General Hospital, Vavuniya. Dr.M.Senavirathne delivered an insightful and interactive presentation focused on understanding common mental health issues among students, identifying early warning signs, and developing effective communication and referral strategies. The presentation also covered practical approaches for academic staff to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere that promotes mental well-being.

A total of 20 academic and executive staff members from the University participated in the training. The session was highly engaging, with participants actively contributing to discussions and raising questions based on their experiences. The training provided valuable knowledge and tools to help academic staff become more confident and proactive in supporting students’ mental health needs. The programme concluded successfully at 12.00 noon, leaving the participants with a deeper understanding of their role in student support and mental health promotion. The SCPD intends to organize similar sessions in the future to further strengthen the mental health support framework within the faculty.
