Git & GitHub Interactive Virtual Session

The IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of the University of Vavuniya successfully organized a virtual session titled “An Interactive Session on Git & GitHub” on March 13, 2025, via the Zoom platform.

The primary goal of the session was to enhance students’ technical proficiency in version control, focusing on the fundamentals of Git and GitHub. The session covered essential topics such as core commands, standard workflows, and collaborative coding practices.

The speaker for the session was Mr. Povindu Samarasekara, an undergraduate at the University of Moratuwa and Intern Software Engineer at 99x. Drawing from his industry experience, Mr. Samarasekara delivered a highly engaging and insightful session that blended theory with real-world applications.

The event welcomed around 55 participants, including 20 IEEE members and 35 non-members. It began with a welcome address and speaker introduction by the Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter, followed by a hands-on session featuring live demonstrations, practical examples, and an interactive Q&A segment.

Participants walked away with:

  • A solid foundation in Git and GitHub

  • Practical skills in repository management

  • Motivation to contribute to open-source projects

The session concluded with a virtual group photo, a vote of thanks by the Chapter Secretary, and a virtual token of appreciation presented to the speaker. The event was smoothly hosted by Mr. Theekshana Thathsara, with technical support provided by the Chapter team.

The session received positive feedback for its interactive and application-driven approach. Special thanks were extended to Mr. Povindu Samarasekara for his valuable contribution, and the Chapter reaffirmed its commitment to empowering students through impactful technical education.
