IEEE Awareness Session 1.0
The IEEE Awareness Session 1.0, organized by the IEEE Student Branch of the University of
Vavuniya, was held on the 1st of February 2025 (Saturday) from 7.00 PM to 9.00 PM via Zoom
platform. This online session aimed to introduce undergraduate students of the University of
Vavuniya to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and its global impact
on professional and technical development. The session served as a platform to educate
attendees about the benefits of IEEE membership, including access to cutting-edge research,
leadership opportunities, global networking, and participation in competitions and
scholarships. The event featured three distinguished speakers, Mr. S. P. Dimuthu Anuraj,
Ms. Vithuckshiha Puvanasingam, and Mrs. Azra Peer, who shared their personal IEEE
journeys and how IEEE helped shape their careers and leadership paths. Mr. Dimuthu , the
Founding Chair of the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Jaffna and former Chair of
the IEEE Computer Society Chapter, emphasized the role of IEEE in bridging academia and
industry and encouraged students to take on leadership positions. Ms.Vithuckshika , a
Product Manager at IYKONS and former Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch
Chapter of the University of Vavuniya, highlighted how IEEE accelerated her career growth
and expanded her professional network. Mrs. Azra, a Business Analyst and former Chair of
IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group of the University of Vavuniya, spoke about the
importance of diversity and inclusion in tech and how IEEE WIE initiatives empowered her
as a woman in STEM.
The session drew the participation of over 40 enthusiastic undergraduate students of the
University of Vavuniya who were keen on exploring professional growth, leadership, and
networking through IEEE. Highlights of the event included a comprehensive introduction to
IEEE’s mission and global structure, an overview of its technical societies such as the
Computer Society and Women in Engineering (WIE), and a live question-and-answer session
where students interacted with the speakers regarding membership benefits, event
participation, and research opportunities. A Kahoot quiz competition was conducted to test
participants’ knowledge about IEEE, with the winner receiving a free IEEE membership as a
prize. The event concluded with a vote of thanks appreciating the speakers, attendees, and
the organizing committee of the IEEE Student Branch for their contributions in making the
event a success. Through inspiring discussions and interactive segments, the IEEE Awareness
Session 1.0 effectively motivated students to join IEEE and become active contributors to its
vibrant global community.
